There are many draws for exploring 'lost' canoe routes, but none greater than the mystery of what may be awaiting. You never know what you're going to encounter. Do the portages exist? Has the dam rotted away? Are water levels suitable? Sometimes, all the uncertainty pays off and you're rewarded with a fantastic route. The Dokis Canoe route is one such 'lost' adventure that will forever stand out in our minds as an incredible getaway. While the majority of the route travels through maintained parks, approximately one third of the route has become 'lost'. Once maintained by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the route fell into disuse as maintenance and promotion played victim to a shrinking budget and internal cuts.
